“Oasis”

Description:
Pastel sunset light falls on the Waterpocket Fold above the Fruita area of Capitol Reef National Park. Viewed from the Fremont River Trail, this scene highlights Navajo, Kayenta, and Wingate Sandstone layers surrounding the historic Fruita orchards, an irrigated oasis established by Mormon settlers in Utah’s high-desert canyon country.

Story:
Overlooking Capitol Reef National Park and the Fruita Campground after sunset from the Fremont River Trail viewpoint.

In a place where water is as precious as gold, the Fruita Campground really does feel like a desert oasis. It was early October. Fall colors hadn’t arrived yet, but the orchards planted nearly two centuries ago by Mormon pioneers were full of ripe apples.

A fruit picker leaned against a tree, free for anyone to use. I plucked a bright red apple, crisp enough to make an audible crunch as I ate it while walking the Fremont River Trail toward the overlook. By the time I reached the viewpoint, the sun had set and the cliffs were washed in pastel light — the perfect moment to make this photograph.
