“Multnomah Falls”

Description:
The most visited national recreation site in the Pacific Northwest, Multnomah Falls attracts up to two million visitors each year. Located in the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side, it’s easily reached from Interstate 84 and only 30 minutes from Portland International Airport. The total height of the falls is 620 feet.

Story:
Heavily photographed and heavily visited, Multnomah Falls in autumn draws even larger crowds.

I was one of many photographers that morning, each of us shielding our lenses from the constant spray drifting out from the base of the falls. It fell like Portland rain: light, persistent, and the kind nobody here bothers using an umbrella for. Annoying enough to streak a lens, but not enough to damage any equipment.

Occasionally someone wandered out onto the bridge. Sometimes I’d fire off a frame without noticing — I was too focused on wiping the lens clean between shots.

But eventually, in the brief pause between streaks of spray and the next person stepping onto the bridge, a clear moment arrived. No people. No streaks. Just the falls in their full autumn setting.
