“Mourning Grove”

Description:
A stand of ancient coast redwoods along the Boy Scout Tree Trail in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City, California. Established in 1929, the 10,430-acre park protects some of the world’s oldest and tallest trees. The trail, created in the 1920s, leads to a redwood over 2,500 years old.

Story:
The trees in this photograph look smaller in print than they are in person. A visit to the redwoods is a walk among giants. Pictures never quite capture it, but art can still stir something inside.

Do you feel it?

The more I studied this scene, the more it resembled a gathering — a quiet memorial for the fallen redwood. The surrounding trees felt like companions paying their respects. Or perhaps the smaller tree, half-hidden to the right, is a grandchild saying goodbye to her grandmother, the forest acting as hospice, easing her passage.

Whatever the story is, I see kinship here. A circle of living beings standing with one who has fallen. And maybe I felt it more deeply because my own grandmother, at the time, was experiencing her final decline.

I love you, Grandma.
