“Mount Bachelor (2)”
Description:
Mount Bachelor, a 15,000-year-old stratovolcano in the Central Oregon Cascades, overlooks the Deschutes National Forest near Bend. The mountain became a ski destination in 1958 and remains one of the Pacific Northwest’s largest winter recreation areas.
Story:
Mount Bachelor quietly slumbers while its slopes are groomed before sunrise on a calm and clear February morning.
I hadn’t slept much the night before in my freezing car at the sno-park, so I felt hesitant about venturing out into the snow to photograph. But after enduring the cold with less than two hours of sleep, I wasn’t willing to give up.
Snowshoeing up Tumalo Mountain, I kept turning around to watch for a break in the trees that would reveal an unobstructed view of Mount Bachelor. The higher I climbed, the better my chances became.
Eventually I reached the edge of a small grove that opened onto a barren stretch of mountainside. From there I looked for a place to frame Mount Bachelor. Snowshoe and ski tracks covered the landscape, impossible to avoid in the composition, so I positioned my camera to include only the trees in the foreground.
With the shot set, I could finally pause and take in the scene. On the slopes of Mount Bachelor I could see the headlamps of snowcats grooming the mountain. Overhead, the sky that had been inky black at the start of my hike shifted to a deep violet. Time for the first photograph of the morning.
The sky moved from purple to pink to orange and then to blue as I continued photographing. My final image was taken just as sunlight touched the treetops along the ski run.
Totally worth the sleepless night in the freezing cold.
