“Moonlight Falls”
Description:
McWay Falls, an 80-foot tidefall in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, drops into a secluded cove along the Big Sur coastline. Once home to the McWay family estate, the viewpoint now overlooks turquoise surf, steep granite cliffs, and one of California’s most photographed natural landmarks.
Story:
The sound of the waterfall was lost beneath the steady rumble of the ocean, yet under moonlight it gleamed like quicksilver. This was blue hour — that quiet window just before sunrise when the world feels suspended between night and day. A gentle breeze drifted into the cove and brushed through the reeds at my feet.
Each exposure was thirty seconds, and my heart raced every time I waited for the camera to finish. The long shutter transformed the waves into swirling ribbons of foam, and the full moon intensified the scene, turning the water into a luminous wash of turquoise and silver.
Little by little, the balance shifted. Morning light began to gather in the east, slowly overpowering the moon’s glow. I took one last look at the cove before heading out, grateful for the rare blend of silence, moonlight, and motion that shaped these photographs.
