“Milo”
Description:
An orange kitten peers through a cedar fence, surrounded by wildflowers and overgrown garden plants. A fleeting moment of curiosity unfolds in a yard where urban wildlife drifts in naturally, creating a safe place for shy creatures to emerge.
Summary:
A orange kitten peers cautiously from between a cedar wood fence.
I made a trip down to San Francisco to see relatives. I missed them on my spring trip to the East Coast where I visited relatives and saw family historical sights, as well as taking the time to do some photography. This was still part of my first year back from teaching English in South Korea — I was still bitten by the travel bug.
My cousin Sarah loves nature and lets her yard run wild — free from the neurotic obsession with manicured lawns. Wildlife frequents her place and enjoys the sanctuary it offers. This kitten, part of a neighborhood litter, dropped by in the evening for a meal. As it appeared between the fence slats — half bold, half unsure — it reminded me of the early wanderings in The Adventures of Milo and Otis, those tentative moments when curiosity nudges a young creature out into the world.
Using a telephoto lens, I kept my distance. After eating, the kitten paused again at the fence, studying its surroundings as if weighing its next step. It looked at me as though asking, “Are you friend or foe?”
