“Mesa Witness”

Description:
Sunrise crowds gather at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, a well-known viewpoint where reflected light briefly illuminates the underside of the arch in vivid orange. Located in the Island in the Sky district, Mesa Arch overlooks Buck Canyon and the La Sal Mountains and is Utah’s most photographed sunrise location.

Story:
A crowd gathers to witness sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park.

Crowds have always been part of landscape photography, but these days it feels like they are increasing because of social media. Secret spots are no longer secret. Mesa Arch was never hidden, but it has become even more popular in recent years.

Despite arriving ninety minutes before sunrise, I was still too late to secure a spot under the arch. It felt like people lining up outside a department store sale.

I left for a short while to photograph the Green River Overlook, which became the source image for “Chrono Vein,” and then returned to Mesa Arch. The parking lot was just as full as when I had arrived.

There is a reason people come here. When the sun rises, the underside of the arch glows a deep, warm orange as light reflects off the cliff below. But that glow lasts only two or three minutes. Arrive too late and you would never know what you missed.
