“Lucy”
Description:
This photograph shows the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse as viewed from Maine during the moment of the Baily’s beads effect. The event marked Maine’s first total solar eclipse since 1963 and was the second total solar eclipse visible in the United States this century.
Story:
Totality was rapidly approaching. What began as a drawn-out process, when the moon first began to slide across the sun, was now reaching its zenith. I had practiced adjusting my camera settings — committing them to muscle memory for this moment when everything felt like it was happening at once.
This photograph is of the Baily’s Beads. The effect is created in the final seconds before and after totality, when it is safe to view without your eclipse glasses, by the uneven surface of the moon allowing sunlight to pass through some areas while being blocked by others.
“Lucy” is in reference to The Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds”. Witnessing a total solar eclipse is an out-of-body experience. Religious. Spiritual. Awesome.
