“Lower South Falls”

Description:
Located along the Trail of Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park, Lower South Falls is one of four waterfalls where the path leads behind the cascade itself. Photographed here during peak autumn color, this 93-foot waterfall is among the park’s most photogenic, framed by big leaf maples that ignite the canyon in yellow.

Story:
Lower South Falls is wrapped in autumn color from the big leaf maples that brighten Silver Falls State Park each October.

Native fall color in western Oregon leans almost entirely yellow, carried by these towering maples. Their glow complements the green moss and evergreens that define the Pacific Northwest.

I planned my visit for a cloudy day and had two waterfalls in mind: Lower South Falls and Upper South Falls. Because it was peak color, even a weekday drew plenty of visitors, so I waited for the right moment when the trail cleared and the scene felt quiet again. As with several waterfalls in the park, a path leads behind the falls and becomes a natural magnet for selfies.

After a heavy rain or during the spring melt, Lower South Falls becomes a much wider curtain of water, more than twice the width seen here. But on this day, the waterfall felt set within a jewel box — its dark basalt walls enshrined in yellow sapphire.
