“Lords of Lava”

Description:
Clouds move across the volcanic landscape of Haleakalā Crater in Haleakalā National Park on Maui. Viewed from near the summit visitor center, the scene reveals cinder cones and lava flows shaped by centuries of erosion. Haleakalā rises over 10,000 feet, offering one of Hawaii’s most dramatic high-elevation viewpoints.

Story:
Clouds drift across the crater floor of Haleakalā during an afternoon in January.

The wind was incredibly powerful. I had to use a modified three-point stance to stabilize myself as I leaned into the guardrail overlooking the crater. Gusts as strong as 40 mph surged up the crater walls and blasted me with cold air.

All my layers were on as I stood at the top of this tropical paradise:
• two hats
• balaclava
• windbreaker
• fleece jacket
• vest
• long-sleeved shirt
• long underwear under hiking pants
• leather boots with thick wool socks

And I wasn’t alone, since I was near the visitor center and parking lot.

Throughout my shoot, several Chinese tourists copied my composition and stood uncomfortably close as they snapped pictures on their phones. It reminded me of my time in Korea — personal space doesn’t mean being out of arm’s reach. I kept photographing, watching the fog drift across the scene and waiting for the right moment.

I took a series of photos and chose the one that provided the essence of what I was trying to capture:
