“Lone Cypress”
Description:
The Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach, California stands atop a granite outcrop along 17-Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula. Estimated at over 250 years old, this Monterey cypress is a famous Pacific Coast landmark and one of California’s most recognized coastal icons.
Story:
The Lone Cypress of Pebble Beach basks in the glow of late-October sunlight.
As fate would have it, the tree would lose its leftmost branch in a storm the following winter. This photograph was made the fall before, in 2018, when the tree still held its full silhouette. I had come to Pebble Beach specifically to photograph this landmark and to experience 17-Mile Drive — both as iconic as the golf course itself. And as someone who doesn’t golf, this was my rare chance to actually see it.
Perched on the southwestern edge of the coast, the Lone Cypress doesn’t look all that lonely if you ask me. From this angle, it becomes the lead in a quiet procession of trees, each one seeming to inch closer to the cliff’s edge.
But in the moment, what struck me most was the light: the way the sun carved out the tree’s shape and gave it a dignified, almost heroic presence, as if it could defy the physics and weather that constantly test its resolve.
