“Liquid Touch”

Description:
Located a few miles north of Pacific City, Tierra Del Mar offers a peaceful coastal vantage point with broad views of the Pacific Ocean. Its open shoreline and frequent cloud layers create subtle, fleeting sunset moments that reflect the quiet character of this lesser-known coastal community.

Story:
The moment the sun makes “contact” with the horizon is always brief, but on this evening along the Oregon coast, it felt almost ceremonial. I hadn’t planned on photographing a traditional sunset. I was here for my abstract work — chasing the shifting bands of light reflecting off the ocean.

But as often happens on this coastline, clouds began to thicken near the horizon, blocking the light I needed. My session came to a halt. Waiting, I noticed the slim gap between the bottom of the cloud bank and the top of the horizon, a narrow window where the sun might reappear.

I had to make a choice: resume the abstract work or capture something entirely different if the sun slipped into that gap.

I chose the latter.

And when the sun finally touched the horizon, the ocean lit up in a way that felt quiet, simple, and complete — a perfect “liquid touch.”
