“Landscape Arch”

Description:
Landscape Arch in Arches National Park, Utah, is one of the longest natural rock spans in the world, measuring about 290 feet across. Formed from Entrada Sandstone, this thin arch sits along the Devils Garden Trail and is a prime example of the park’s ongoing erosion and geologic evolution.

Story:
Another example of me arriving early to a spot to photograph under ideal light. Because it faces northeast, Landscape Arch is best viewed in the morning as the it receives direct sunlight — bringing to life the rich golden colors of the sandstone.

When I parked at the Devils Garden Trailhead, I was alone. It was still dark and I wore a headlamp to find my way to the arch. I spooked myself when my headlamp caught the eyes of deer looking at me while foraging. Unfamiliar with the desert, I thought maybe it was a coyote!

At the arch itself, I set up my camera and waited for the light. About 20 minutes later a couple Chinese photographers arrived to join, but they only stayed briefly before moving on. I was again alone.

I witnessed the early sunlight ignite the arch like fire — the shadow of the arch visible against the background, moving slowly down as the sun rose. By the time I returned to my car, the parking lot was full and a busy day sightseeing at the park was in full swing.
