“Koyo Silence”
Description:
The Flat Garden at the Portland Japanese Garden features raked gravel patterns, manicured evergreens, and brilliant autumn maples set against a misty forest backdrop. Designed for contemplation, this karesansui (dry landscape) garden blends precision and natural beauty, offering visitors a peaceful space to reflect on balance, change, and impermanence.
Story:
In the stillness of autumn, the Flat Garden becomes a living meditation. Each maple leaf turns in quiet conversation with time, its color deepening like a final breath before winter’s sleep. The raked gravel mirrors this calm, holding the memory of motion in every line. Here, amid the hush of mist and moss, change feels eternal — a fleeting moment captured in perfect balance between life and letting go. Koyo means “autumn” in Japanese and the stillness here was a peaceful and meditative silence that defines these gardens.
I photographed this scene after spending the earlier part of the morning capturing the famous Japanese maple that used for “Autumn Monarch” and “Gnarled Glory”.
