“Kiwanda Sunset”

Description:
A winter sunset sets beside Haystack Rock in Pacific City, Oregon, a 335-foot basalt sea stack traditionally known as Chief Kiawanda to the Nestucca people. This Oregon Coast landmark is easily viewed from the beach and parking area as the sun meets the Pacific Ocean.

Story:
The sun sinks toward the horizon beside Haystack Rock in Pacific City, filling the winter sky with a warm, golden glow. Moments like this are simple yet profound, the kind that stop you in your tracks no matter how many times you have watched the sun meet the sea.

The air was cold, but the light felt anything but. Winter sunsets along the Oregon coast often carry a clarity that summer never quite matches. The colors are cleaner, the atmosphere calmer, and the sky glows with a quiet intensity as the sun begins its descent.

I waited for the moment when the sun would begin to dip below the horizon, its light radiating outward — one final act.

Photographed along the edge of the parking lot, the shoreline was surprisingly alive with people during a crisp afternoon in January:

• walkers carrying their shoes over the cool sand
• beer lovers sharing pints from the Pelican Brew Pub
• children chasing each other with pure, youthful joy
• even a beachcomber sweeping the sand with a metal detector

It was an afternoon when time felt unimportant, marked only by the slow descent of the sun.
