“Kiwanda Storm”

Description:
A winter storm briefly clears over Haystack Rock in Pacific City, Oregon, a 327-foot basalt sea stack known to the Nestucca people as Chief Kiawanda. This major Oregon Coast landmark is easily viewed from the beach when storm light reveals the sea arch and breaking waves.

Story:
A sunbreak during a winter storm along the Oregon coast illuminates the crests of windswept waves in front of Haystack Rock.

Cape Kiwanda is a place I return to often, not to repeat myself, but because it never offers the same moment twice. Light, weather, tide, and season create endless combinations, and each visit reveals a slightly different version of the familiar. Winter, especially, is full of surprises.

During these months the sun sits low on the horizon, and from this perspective the arch of Haystack Rock becomes clearly visible. The right conditions can transform the coastline in an instant.

For this photograph, patience mattered. I waited for a sunbreak to move across the storm clouds and for a wave to crest at just the right moment. With my eye pressed to the viewfinder I watched the ocean crash, settle, and rise again as time unfolded through each passing wave.
