“Kings Grade”

Description:
Fog lifts over vineyards along Ribbon Ridge as seen from Kings Grade in the Chehalem Mountains near Newberg, Oregon. This early-autumn scene highlights the Willamette Valley’s rolling foothills, mixed conifer–oak woodlands, volcanic Jory soils, and the cool, fog-prone climate that defines Oregon wine country.

Story:
In the heart of Oregon wine country between Newberg and Gaston, fog lifts during an early autumn morning along Ribbon Ridge.

The name of the photograph, Kings Grade, comes from the road where it was captured — a steep climb up Chehalem Mountain overlooking the wineries of Ribbon Ridge. When I was in high school, a friend once got his car stuck in a ditch on Kings Grade, back when the road was still gravel.

Like my friend, Kings Grade had an unexpected twist for me. But with the road long since paved, my surprise was a fortunate one.

I woke to clear skies — exactly the conditions I had hoped for to create an image I’d envisioned. But when I arrived at the shoulder pullout at the top of Kings Grade, the vineyards below were completely socked in with fog. Dismayed, I was about to turn around and head home when the fog suddenly began to lift.

With almost no time to prepare, I quickly set up my camera and tripod to capture this brief moment of fog and fall color.

(Eminent Domaine sits along Ribbon Ridge, and Jachter Vineyards occupies the low-lying vineyard before the treeline.)
