“Horsetail Falls (Autumn)”

Description:
Photographed from beneath Highway 30, Horsetail Falls in the Columbia River Gorge is the last major waterfall visible from the Historic Columbia River Highway before it reconnects with Interstate 84 near Dodson. When the Eagle Creek Fire tore through the Gorge in September 2017, this waterfall was miraculously spared.

Story:
Autumn colors at Horsetail Falls were blowing wildly in the wind created by the waterfall itself.

The spray from the plunge pool formed its own miniature rainstorm, funneled straight downstream and directly onto my camera. Lens cloths were in high demand — I cycled through several trying to keep the front element clean.

It felt like waiting one more day would’ve sent every maple leaf into the river. But somehow they held on, tough as brick rather than straw or sticks.

This is one of my favorite waterfalls to photograph because it feels like a hidden pocket of the Gorge. Most people shoot from the roadside viewpoint or the stone steps that lead to the base, but I’d never seen a photo taken from this perspective — tucked underneath the bridge.

Down here, you can have the place to yourself. With the thunder of the falls drowning out every trace of ambient noise, it becomes its own little escape from the world.

“Who’s that tramping over my bridge?” roared the troll.
