“Hoover Dam (BW)”
Description:
Hoover Dam spans the Black Canyon of the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona. Photographed from the Highway 93 bypass, this view shows the 1930s concrete arch-gravity dam and its powerhouses, a major engineering project of the Great Depression that remains one of the most visited and significant hydroelectric structures in the United States.
Story:
Photographed from the Highway 93 bypass, Hoover Dam was constructed during the Great Depression and is one of the most iconic dams in the world.
Anyone can now access this elevated viewpoint simply by stopping and walking onto the bridge. The view is free and straightforward. What isn’t straightforward is getting a shadow-free photograph. With nearly 300 days of sunshine a year, cloudy conditions are rare.
Fortunately, during my visit, tropical storm Sergio was passing through. Several consecutive days of cloud cover and rain created the perfect diffused light.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, I drove down to the dam and captured this image as if I’d been flown in by helicopter.
