“Hood River Bridge (Winter)”

Description:
Hood River was incorporated in 1895, with the Hood River Bridge completed in 1924 and expanded after Bonneville Dam was built in the 1930s. Photographed from a tribal fishing site in winter, this view features the bridge spanning the Columbia River with Mount Hood rising behind it.

Story:
The cold was like the nipping of a small dog: sharp and annoying, persistent but not debilitating.

I had to jostle back and forth, blowing warm air into cupped hands and rubbing them together just to keep enough feeling in my fingers to operate the camera. I wore hip-waders to cross the ankle-deep water and reach a dry patch of rocks where I could set up my tripod. Without the insulation of a hiking boot, my toes steadily went numb.

Whenever I look at this photograph, I feel that same frigidness. That coldness.

In that early winter morning, the mountain, the river, and the toll bridge seemed bound together in a kind of frozen triptych. The streaks of gold and red crossing the bridge belong to commuters from White Salmon, Washington, and Hood River, Oregon, heading out to begin the workday.

Another dime; another day.
