“Hidden Falls”

Description:
Located within Grand Teton National Park, Hidden Falls is most commonly reached by taking the shuttle boat across Jenny Lake from the visitor center. Photographed here in mid-spring, this 100-foot waterfall thunders through the canyon as snowmelt peaks. Grand Teton National Park was established in 1929 and later expanded in 1950.

Story:
Fueled by melting snow and ice, Hidden Falls in Grand Teton National Park is at its grandest in spring.

Reaching the falls this time of year means hiking through lingering snow and patches of ice. (This photograph was taken in mid-May.) Once you arrive, you have to guard your camera constantly — spray from the waterfall coats the lens, and I was wiping it between every shot.

An approaching afternoon thunderstorm brought thick, overcast skies that softened the light and eliminated harsh shadows. Perfect conditions.

Wait… did I mention the approaching thunderstorm?

Oh yes — that was no joke. How I made it back to my car without getting caught in it is a story all on its own.

I suppose there’s a reason they call it Hidden Falls…
