“Guardian (2)”
Description:
A lone tree stands amid the rolling hills of the Palouse, photographed from Steptoe Butte in eastern Washington. These loess-formed hills were shaped by Ice Age floods and centuries of windblown silt. Today the region is one of the nation’s most productive wheat-growing landscapes, known for its striking light and shadow.
Story:
Overhead clouds spotlight the landscape during a blustery late-May afternoon on Steptoe Butte.
The wind was fierce. It chased the clouds overhead and pummeled my car as I circumnavigated the road that corkscrews around the butte. Despite having access to 360-degree views, the wind dictated that I photograph from one direction — the side with the least force.
As I searched for a composition, I found a view centered on a tree surrounded by green hills and an s-shaped road. With the clouds in constant motion, the light shifted across the landscape. What was once in shadow became bathed in sunlight.
The tree felt like a steady presence. It remained while the light changed. And its size, shape, and isolation gave it a weighty presence. I saw it not as a statue, but as a soldier on watch.
