“Fruit Stripe”
Description:
Known for its multicolored bark, the rainbow eucalyptus, also known as rainbow gum, is native to the Philippines and was introduced to Maui for reforestation. Its peeling layers reveal shifting bands of color. Groves now grow along the Hana Highway and Haleakalā Highway, where the trunks create naturally abstract patterns.
Story:
The colorful inner bark of a rainbow eucalyptus on the island of Maui.
A flight over from the Mainland gave me a chance encounter with a talented colored-pencil artist who winters on Maui with her husband. When I mentioned my interest in abstract photography, she told me she’d once seen an abstract photograph of rainbow eucalyptus in a local gallery. I had never heard of the tree before our conversation — though I already knew the scent.
Driving up Haleakalā with the rental car windows down, I was enjoying the changing scenery when a familiar minty, earthy smell drifted in. Eucalyptus. Moments later, around a hairpin turn, I saw them: a grove of rainbow eucalyptus, some four to five feet in diameter.
I pulled over immediately.
One tree in particular stood out — wide, weathered, and wrapped in an astonishing range of colors. Perfect for abstract work. I spent the next stretch of time studying its surface, photographing the shifting bands of pigment as the peeled bark revealed new layers of color and shapes.
