“Eden”

Description:
The Hood River Valley of Oregon is famous for its pears, apples, and cherries. Seen here are pear orchards in full bloom with Washington’s Mount Adams rising in the background. First planted in 1855, the valley now supports more than 14,000 acres of fruit trees across its rolling, volcanic-soil farmland.

Story:
Mid-spring in the Hood River Valley transforms the hills into a sea of white pear blossoms, with Mount Adams gleaming above it all. I first scouted this location the previous autumn, knowing I’d need to return when the trees reached peak bloom — the brief moment each year when the valley feels utterly renewed.

The rounded, terraced orchards naturally echo the gentle slopes of the stratovolcano, creating a harmony of forms that only reveals itself when everything is in bloom. Clear skies, warm light, and a full set of blossoms aligned on this visit, giving the scene an almost pastoral serenity.

What struck me most was how the orchards and mountain mirrored each other: snow above, blossoms below. A living landscape shaped by both agriculture and geology.
