“Dune Storm”
Description:
A stormy morning at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon, captured with a long exposure that blurs incoming clouds over the sandstone headland. Haystack Rock sits offshore as dune grasses frame the foreground. The image reflects the dramatic weather patterns common along this stretch of the Oregon Coast.
Story:
As a storm moved onshore, the sky darkened and the wind began to rise while the rain returned in waves. There were hardly any people on the beach when I made this photograph. Rain had been falling on and off throughout the night and well into the morning.
A brief pause in the weather gave me enough time to create this long-exposure image, which captures the dramatic motion of the clouds while softening the ocean below. Long exposures can transform a scene, especially when wind pushes the clouds directly toward the subject. Here, that subject is the sandstone cape of Cape Kiwanda.
Not every day on the Oregon coast looks like this, but when storms gather and the sky turns restless, Pacific City often takes on this exact mood.
