“Dragon’s Tail”

Description:
At sunrise, a retreating wave slides down the dark sandstone of Cape Kiwanda, revealing patterns that resemble a dragon’s tail. Haystack Rock sits on the horizon as the Pacific surges beneath colorful clouds. The scene reflects the raw beauty and unpredictable conditions of Oregon’s most dramatic headland.

Story:
A wave recedes off the backside of Cape Kiwanda during a colorful sunrise. This photograph was taken in a dangerous part of the cape. Although access is not prohibited by law, the state strongly discourages venturing this far out. It is risky terrain, and conditions can turn quickly.

Timing was everything. I needed a swell strong enough to wash up onto the cape at the exact moment the sunrise lit the clouds with color. Long stretches of waiting separated those rare waves that reached far enough across the rock.

As I stood there watching the ocean rise and fall, the shape of the cape began to resemble a dragon’s tail slipping in and out of the sea. Haystack Rock, visible in the distance, felt like the tip of that tail. Wild and unpredictable, it was a creature that took no prisoners.
