“Dory Dog”
Description:
At Cape Kiwanda’s tide pools, a dory fisherman prepares his boat in the soft blue hour before sunrise. Haystack Rock rises offshore while the sandstone headland reflects across the beach. Pacific City is home to Oregon’s only surf-launched dory fleet, a distinctive part of the coast’s maritime history.
Story:
A dory fisherman at Pacific City readies his gear as his loyal companion barks non-stop from the pickup truck at what I could guess was me! The soft pastel colors in this photograph come from the time before sunrise, a brief window known as blue hour.
Blue hour is one of my favorite times to photograph. The world feels quieter, and fewer people are around. On this morning, however, I learned that fishermen appreciate it too. Perhaps it is not the light they seek, but the tide, since low tide aligned perfectly with both blue hour and sunset that day.
I was not expecting a dory boat to launch so close to the tide pools. I had been fully prepared to make this image without a person in the frame. His arrival was an unexpected photobomb. And since the light was changing faster than he was moving, I simply had to work with the moment.
There was no other choice
And that was perfectly fine.
