“Deriva”

Description:
Photographed along the Oregon Coast near Tierra Del Mar, this abstract seascape uses intentional camera movement to blend sand, surf, and sky into horizontal bands of color. Captured in daylight, the image transforms the coastal horizon between Cape Lookout and Sandlake into a study of motion, light, and time.

Story:
Intentional camera movement or ICM, was something I started experimenting with and incorporating in to my photography practice in May, around my 29th birthday. It was something I noticed occasionally online when researching photography. The technique is employed often along coastlines and in the areas with quaking aspen. It gives an impression of the landscape — highlighting its colors.

For this shot, I traveled to place near where my family has a vacation home. From here, the road overlooks the beach from cliff. Pointing my camera north, I wanted to capture the colors from the shore all the way to the cape at the edge of the horizon while preserving a sense of place. Anyone familiar with the area will recognize where the colors derived from.

Later in 2019, I used this same location to focus my camera on the breaking of waves during clear skies when the sun reflects off the water. This forms the basis for my growing BAPstract collection.
