“Coming Home”

Description:
A sailboat enters San Francisco Bay beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, completed in 1937 to link the city with Marin County and improve access across the dangerous strait. Photographed from the shores of historic Fort Baker, once a military post guarding the bay, this vantage highlights the bridge’s scale and enduring role as a coastal gateway.

Story:
Sunlight strikes the edge of a sailboat as it enters San Francisco Bay after passing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge on an overcast day.

Patience is always required when waiting for moving elements to align. It’s during these stretches of waiting that I really notice my surroundings. Fort Baker, where I stood, was once a military post guarding this entrance to the bay long before the bridge existed. Now it’s one of the best places to watch the constant movement of ships, ferries, and sailboats slipping in and out of the Pacific.

The sailboats on the bay seem to appear whenever they feel like it. Their white sails contrast sharply with the International Orange of the Golden Gate Bridge, which was built in 1937 to finally connect San Francisco to Marin County and tame one of the most treacherous straits on the West Coast.

All I was focused on, in this moment, was waiting for a boat to drift into the frame. Often, they’d be too far to the other side to even register in a photograph. Then I saw the mast of a sailboat finally close enough.

And just as it moved into position, a beam of sunlight broke through the clouds like a spotlight. My heartbeat increased because I knew the moment would be brief.

My timing had to be right.
