“Chehalem Fall (1)”

Description:
Golden hour illuminates the vineyards of Chehalem Winery and Rex Hill in the Chehalem Mountains AVA of Newberg, Oregon. This landscape showcases rolling foothills, volcanic Jory soils, oak–fir woodlands, and the patchwork harvest colors that define the Willamette Valley during peak autumn in Oregon wine country.

Story:
“Golden hour” in the heart of wine country can produce remarkably rich colors during peak autumn. Seen here are the vineyards for Chehalem Winery and Rex Hill Vineyards.

It has to be said: photographing Oregon wine country is both limited and difficult. Access is rare. There’s no equivalent to Steptoe Butte in the Palouse — no high public lookout that gives an unobstructed 360-degree view. In the Willamette Valley, you either get lucky with a public vantage point, like I did here, or you ask a winery for permission to walk the grounds.

I discovered this viewpoint while scouting during the day. The colors looked incredible from Highway 99W on the drive out of town toward Sherwood, so I turned down a nearby rural road to explore. The only public option was the water tower, and that’s where I returned that evening to make this photograph.

Welcome to Oregon’s wine country.
