“Cathedral (2)”
Description:
Photographed during a minus tide at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, Oregon, this image reveals a hidden sea cave with towering sandstone walls sculpted by waves and wind. The reflective wet sand and narrow passageway showcase the raw, otherworldly beauty of the Oregon Coast’s ever-changing shoreline.
Story:
At minus tide, the ocean steps back just long enough to reveal one of Cape Kiwanda’s quietest sanctuaries. The walls rise like stone organs, their surfaces carved by centuries of wind and salt. Every sound is amplified, the hush of water, the echo of your own breath, the distant heartbeat of waves returning.
I named this photograph “Cathedral” because the feeling inside is unmistakable. Light filters through the narrow opening above like stained glass made of sky and the arches remind me of the flying buttresses of the gothic cathedrals I’ve witnessed while traveling through Europe.
It’s easy to forget this place exists most of the year, buried beneath the tide. But when the ocean recedes during the summer it leaves behind a fleeting invitation: step inside, stand in the presence of time itself, and feel how small and sacred the world can be.
