“Castaway”

Story:
An unusually large stone is left behind as the tide retreats at Cape Kiwanda.

Like with any popular place, the quietest times can be right before sunrise. In the case of this morning, the ocean was calm and retreating. The dory fisherman had yet to arrive.

Walking the shoreline in my hip-waders, I looked around the glistening dark brown sand for objects that might create the perfect foreground element. Tiny smooth stones and bits of shell pocketed the landscape. Interesting, but too small. Ripples in the sand proved to be equally inadequate.

Finally, as I neared the edge of the sandstone cliff, an unusually large stone appeared. Its presence seemingly out of place. Almost as if it had come from some other distant shoreline filled with stones of similar size.
