“Cape Kiwanda (2)

Description:
A minus tide exposes Cape Kiwanda’s sandstone ledges and mussel beds in Pacific City, Oregon, with Haystack Rock rising offshore. Dory boats launch along the beach under an overcast sky, revealing the natural geology and coastal activity that define this well-known Oregon Coast landmark.

Story:
A minus tide at Cape Kiwanda reveals dory boats, an overcast sky, and a shoreline sitting lower than usual. If you look closely, you can see the “bathtub ring” around Haystack Rock, also known as Chief Kiawanda Rock. The dark areas on the cape are also visible during the minus tide, covered in mussels and mollusks that are usually hidden.

There were many dory fishermen out that morning. From where I stood, I could watch them launching out to sea. Photographed early in the day, there were still few beachgoers. It was a perfect moment to be outside, whether you were carrying fishing gear or a camera.
