“Cancan (BW)”
Description:
Snow-covered fir trees stand sculpted by wind and ice near the summit of Dog Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge. Captured in black and white, the image highlights dramatic textures and contrasts, revealing the raw beauty of winter’s power in one of Oregon’s most iconic hiking destinations.
Story:
Getting here from the car was an uphill adventure following the packed footsteps of those who had been before. Dog Mountain is a popular day hike and is best enjoyed any time of the year. This was my first time visiting in the snow and I didn’t know what to expect so I brought my camera to see what opportunities were around.
Once the tree line thins, the wind becomes intense and and one directional. It wasn’t hard for me to notice that these trees made for interesting subjects! Each tree appeared like a dancer draped in layers of sculpted white, their branches flared in front like arms and legs bent by the rhythm of the wind.
On my way back down to the car I enjoyed sliding down parts of the trail — giving my legs a rest and enjoying the uniqueness of visiting the mountain this time of the year.
