“Blood Moon”

Description:
During a total lunar eclipse, the moon glows red, inspiring legends across cultures that linked the “blood moon” to transformation or celestial warning. Today we know the color comes from sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere, but the sense of mystery remains when the moon appears reborn in the darkening sky.

Story:
May IS the time to visit Dallas Mountain Ranch and the areas near The Dalles and the greater Columbia River Gorge for wildflower blooms. Yet I don’t have a single picture of the blooms on my website. Instead, in order to photograph the blood moon, I journeyed to a windy field of flowers to take advantage of one very important condition: clear skies.

The skies were not clear where I lived, and with the blood moon occurring shortly after sunset, I knew I needed to drive two hours east to get the best view I could. It just so happened that Dallas Mountain Ranch would be the perfect spot. Had the skies been clear enough to see Mount Hood, I would have attempted to capture an iconic photograph of the yellow and purple wildflowers during sunset with Hood in the background. What a scenic location!

However, I had to focus on finding a spot with the least amount of wind so I could keep my camera and tripod rock solid for photographing a very special lunar eclipse — the wind can be very unforgiving in the Gorge.

What made this eclipse unique was the fact that totality occurred just before sunset and reached maximum 42 minutes later. Blood Moon was created from images captured at the right moment, when the sky was dark enough for the warm glow of the lunar eclipse to be visible yet light enough to remain a deep sapphire blue instead of inky black.

A textbook example of perfect timing.
