“Big Pink Bloom”

Description:
The U.S. Bancorp Tower in downtown Portland, Oregon, commonly known as the “Big Pink” was completed in 1983. This 42-story skyscraper was designed by Modernist architect Pietro Belluschi, along with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. In the foreground, cherry blossoms donated from Japan line Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River.

Story:
For a building that’s already unique for its color, the cherry blossoms emphasize Big Pink’s pinkness. This building is one of my favorites and reminds me of Tetris. Having grown up in a town just outside the metropolitan area, visiting Portland always felt like an adventure. Iconic skyscrapers such as Big Pink start to become like friends — they are a familiar sight.

What’s interesting is that Big Pink is actually a parallelogram: there are no right angles. I find the best angles to be from across the river where you can see it on foot, as in this photo, from the Eastbank Esplanade or by car on Interstate 5 coming back from PDX or the Gorge.

By the way, the restaurant on the 30th floor, Portland City Grill, has excellent views of Portland, Mt. St Helens and Mt Hood. Hopefully Big Pink continues to exist as our world becomes increasingly digital and remote.
