“Beyond”

Description:
Evening light illuminates the volcanic cliffs of Leslie Gulch in southeastern Oregon. This remote canyon of rhyolite tuff and honeycomb weathering sits within the Owyhee region, drawing hikers and photographers to its dramatic rock formations, desert shrubs, and winding gravel roads that define this rugged high-desert landscape.

Story:
Sunlight enters Leslie Gulch in southeastern Oregon during late spring as sunset approaches.

I love how evening light separates the foreground from the background when standing in a canyon. Here, the golden light accentuates the cream-orange volcanic tuff and creates a sense of depth not found earlier in the day.

When I look at this scene, I wonder what lies ahead. The gravel road feels inviting — leading into the warm glow at the end. That light gives me a sense of hope. I feel as if whatever waits beyond will be welcoming and awesome.

And in fact, what lies ahead is welcoming and awesome. Just past the bend are hiking routes that take you through juniper trees and honeycomb-shaped rock. The perfume of juniper — stronger and sweeter than cedar — filled my nostrils with a fragrance I always enjoy. And the honeycomb rock looks like nothing else I’ve seen. Pocket-marked, textured, and sculpted, the name fits perfectly.

You don’t even have to go around the bend to see it. The upper left corner of this photograph shows the honeycombing clearly. But to me, this land is like coffee cake: the crust of the rock is the brown-sugar topping over a lighter, moist interior. It’s as if this entire region had been baked in some giant volcanic oven.
