“Battery Point Light”
Description:
Battery Point Light in Crescent City, California, sits on a tidal island exposed only at low tide. The area reveals basalt rock formations, intertidal pools, and the narrow land bridge connecting the lighthouse to shore. Strong tidal swings make the site accessible only during specific low-tide windows.
Story:
Low tide at Battery Point Light reveals a harbor crowded with rocks on a clear mid-autumn morning. The change between low and high tide here isn’t subtle — it’s dramatic. At low tide you can see everything: scattered boulders, hidden formations, and even the narrow isthmus that becomes the access road to the island.
Tours of the lighthouse run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but only when tides allow. When I first arrived in Crescent City the afternoon before, the tide was too high to even approach the island. I only had a couple of days in town, so if I wanted a closer look, sunrise was my best chance.
I rolled out of bed before dawn and drove to the wooden pier across from the lighthouse, scanning for a stable place to set up my tripod. The night sky was fading from inky black to a deep magnetic blue that slowly softened toward daylight.
In the stillness, the lighthouse lens rotated steadily, sweeping light across the harbor and revealing the rocks that dotted the waterline. Each pass illuminated the scene in a different pattern, like a slow, rhythmic pulse. I found myself transfixed — watching the beam circle again and again, pulling my attention back each time it crossed the rocks below.
