“Autumn Reflections”
Description:
Vernonia Lake sits in the upper Nehalem Valley beside the town of Vernonia. Originally a mill pond for the Oregon-American Lumber Company, the lake now anchors the start of the Banks–Vernonia State Trail, built on the old rail line. Each autumn the shoreline becomes a vivid display of color.
Story:
Autumn colors make a particularly strong showing along the shores of Vernonia Lake.
Earlier that day I’d been photographing the Japanese maple in Portland (see “Autumn Monarch” and “Gnarled Glory”), and afterward I drove an hour west to revisit Vernonia Lake — a place I’d biked past a month earlier on the Banks–Vernonia Trail.
On that ride, I’d noticed an abandoned lakeside building with a big leaf maple growing inside its graffitied shell. Online photos made it look like a dream shot for autumn. But by the time I arrived this day, the tree inside had already shed almost everything — only a handful of leaves remained.
So I let that idea go.
Walking back toward my car, I saw the shoreline explode with color: golds from the maples, greens from the conifers, and unexpected maroon from the plum trees planted years ago. The reflection on the still water sealed it — this was the photograph waiting for me all along.
What a way to finish the day.
