“Anchor Rock (2)”
Description:
Part of the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area on Oregon’s northern coast, this southwest-facing view was photographed just before sunrise in the winter. The sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda, located near Pacific City along the Three Capes Scenic Route, have been sculpted over millennia by wind, waves, and rain. Haystack Rock, made of basalt, is visible in the distance.
Story:
The sandstone cliffs of Cape Kiwanda glow in the cool light of blue hour as sunrise approaches on a winter morning along the Oregon coast. High tide pressed against the base of the cape, and unlike on rare minus-tide days, there was no walking beneath the arch you see in this photograph.
To reach this vantage point, I walked the shoreline at Pacific City and climbed the large sand dune to the left side of the photograph. It was still as dark as night, so I needed a headlamp, but the stars were bright and unfiltered. Along the Oregon coast, the rural landscape keeps the night sky clear of major light pollution. The heavens felt larger, sharper, alive. But the glow of the coming sunrise was already beginning to mute the stars in the east.
Huffing and puffing up the dune, I paused more than once simply to take in the stillness. Eventually I reached the crest, then worked my way down and around toward the cliff edge, where I would set up my tripod. The soft sand gave way to firm, rain-darkened sandstone. I slipped a few times on the angled slope as it curved away from the edge — a needed reminder to be respectful of the terrain.
From here, with the tide rising and the cliffs beginning to gather light, the composition revealed itself. The moment felt quiet, cold, and utterly alive.
