“A Different Time”

Description:
This photograph features the Old Weber Farmhouse, an abandoned homestead set among the rolling hills outside Pullman, Washington. The surrounding Palouse region is shaped by ancient wind-blown loess, forming fertile soils that once supported small family farms like this one. Today, its weathered frame stands as a reminder of early agricultural life.

Story:
An abandoned farmhouse sits idly in a field off Whitman Road on the outskirts of Pullman, Washington.

It’s one of the more recognizable farmhouses in the region, photographed so often that “No Trespassing” signs now surround it — signs I removed in Photoshop to preserve the building’s vintage charm. Commonly called the Old Weber Farmhouse, it feels anchored to another era. As I stood there, I found myself imagining the 1930s, the same decade that inspired The Wizard of Oz. The house looks like it belongs in those opening scenes, before Dorothy and Toto are carried away by the storm.

The sky that day was equally foreboding — heavy clouds drifting low — but here in the Palouse, the land is all rolling hills, not the flat plains where tornadoes roam. There was no threat of a storm, no cinematic twist. Just me, the wind, and a relic from a different time.
