“Mt. Bachelor (1)”

Location: Mt. Tumalo, Oregon (2020)

Mt. Bachelor quietly slumbers while its slopes are groomed before sunrise on a calm and clear February morning.

I didn’t get much sleep the night before in my freezing car at the sno-park, so I was hesitant about venturing out into the snow to photograph.

Having endured the cold with less than 2 hours of sleep, I was determined not to give up despite my hesitation.

Snowshoeing my way up Mt. Tumalo, I periodically turned around and looked for a spot where the trees would open up and showcase an unobscured Mt. Bachelor.

(The higher I hiked, the more the opportunity increased.)

Eventually I reached the edge of a cluster of trees that opened to a barren section of the mountain.

From here I began searching for a place to frame Mt. Bachelor. Snowshoe and ski tracks dotted the landscape. It was impossible to avoid them in my photograph. So my solution was to position my camera so that just the trees were showing in the foreground.

With my composition set, I could relax and observer my surroundings. On the slopes of the Mt. Bachelor I could clearly see the headlamps of several snowcats as they worked to groom the slopes. Overhead, the sky, and inky black when I had started my hike, was becoming a shade of shade of purple. Time for my first photograph of the morning.

The sky would continue to progress from purple to pink to orange and finally sky blue as I photographed. My last photograph once the sunlight reached the treetops of the ski slope.

Totally worth the sleepless night in the freezing cold!
